Point of Sale

What Happens When Your POS Loses Internet?

Every cashier in Lebanon has lived this moment: mid-queue, the internet drops. If your POS needs a live connection for every tap, the till stops and a line forms. Here's what actually happens on YellowPOS instead — and the new screen that shows you exactly what's still waiting to upload.

The sale doesn't wait for the server

YellowPOS loads your product catalog, prices, and stock into the browser the moment you open the register. After that, ringing up a sale is entirely local — adding items, scanning a barcode, applying a discount, picking a client, recording the amount paid, and printing the receipt all happen on the device with zero network calls. The server only comes into it twice: once to load the page, and once at the end to receive the finished order. Everything in between keeps working exactly the same whether you have five bars of signal or none.

Where the sale goes while you're offline

If you complete a checkout with no connection, YellowPOS doesn't throw an error — it quietly saves the whole order (items, discount, delivery, payment amount and method, cashier, order number) into a queue on that device and tells you it's been saved and will upload once you're back online. It also drops the on-screen stock count for whatever you just sold, so if the same item comes up again on that screen a minute later, you can see it's running low or out — even though the change hasn't reached your account yet.

Syncing back automatically

The instant your connection returns, YellowPOS pushes every queued order to your account in the background, one by one, with no button to press. The same check runs again the next time you open the POS, in case the internet came back while the tab was closed. Within a minute or two of reconnecting, your queue is usually empty and every sale is sitting in Orders like it always does.

New: the Unsynced Orders view

We recently added a way to actually see that queue instead of trusting it blindly. A small badge lights up next to Unsynced Orders in the POS's Quick Actions whenever anything is waiting — tap it and a list opens showing each order's number, cashier, items, and total. The list isn't a snapshot: it updates live as orders sync, so you watch the count drop in real time instead of refreshing the page to check.

There's also a Retry Sync button in that view. The automatic sync already fires the moment your browser detects it's back online, but if you want to force an attempt right away — or the automatic one hit a snag — Retry Sync tries immediately and tells you what happened: how many synced, or how many are still failing and why, instead of leaving you guessing.

The two things that do need a connection

We'd rather be precise than oversell this. Opening the POS for the very first time on a device needs one online visit, so it can cache your catalog before it can work offline. And uploading a finished sale, obviously, needs a connection at some point — it just doesn't need it at the moment you make the sale. Everything else — building the cart, taking payment, printing the receipt — runs on the device regardless of connectivity.

Frequently asked questions

Does a cloud POS still work if the internet goes down?

A well-built one does. YellowPOS loads your catalog into the browser once, then the register itself — cart, discounts, payment, receipt — runs locally with no live connection needed. Only the initial load and the final upload of a finished sale touch the server.

Can I still take a customer's payment while offline?

Yes. The payment amount and method are recorded as part of the sale, saved on the device, and synced later — exactly like the rest of the order. You don't need a connection at the moment of payment.

What if the internet is still down when I close for the day?

Nothing is lost. Sales stay queued on that device until it reconnects, whether that's ten minutes or the next morning. Opening the Unsynced Orders view any time shows you exactly what's still waiting.

Does printing a receipt need an internet connection?

No. The receipt is built and sent to the printer by the browser itself, not by a server request, so it prints the same whether you're online or not.
