Invoice vs Receipt: What's the Difference for Lebanese Businesses?

They're often confused, but they do opposite jobs. An invoice requests payment; a receipt proves payment. Here's when to use each — and how to issue both without extra software.

Ask ten business owners in Lebanon the difference between an invoice and a receipt and you'll get a few blank looks. It matters, though — using the wrong one makes your records confusing and can make a client wonder whether they still owe you. The good news: the distinction is simple once you see it.

The one-line difference

An invoice is a request for payment. It lists what the client owes and is usually sent before they pay. A receipt is proof of payment. It confirms money was received and is given after they pay. Invoice = "please pay this." Receipt = "thanks, you paid."

When to use an invoice

Use an invoice whenever payment happens after delivery, or when you want a formal record of what's owed. A designer finishing a project, a wholesaler shipping an order to a shop, a caterer billing for an event, a freelancer invoicing monthly retainer work — all of these send an invoice first. It carries a unique number, the client's details, the itemised amounts, and a due date, so everyone knows what's expected and by when. A good invoice can also show a balance due if the client has paid part of it.

When to use a receipt

Use a receipt to confirm payment was received. In a shop or restaurant where the customer pays on the spot, the receipt is often the only document needed — payment and handover happen together. It's proof for the customer and a record for you. In YellowPOS, receipts come straight out of a completed POS order and can be printed on the spot.

A quick comparison

  • Purpose: invoice requests payment; receipt confirms it.
  • Timing: invoice before payment; receipt after payment.
  • Says: invoice = amount owed; receipt = amount paid.
  • Typical user: invoice for service providers and wholesalers; receipt for instant retail sales.

Handling both in one place

Most Lebanese businesses need both at some point, and you don't need two apps for it. In YellowPOS, you issue invoices from the Invoices section — numbered billing documents you can print, download as PDF, and record payments against — and you print receipts from POS orders after a sale. Both live in the same dashboard alongside your products, orders, and reports.
